Emertonella sp Bark-dwelling Emertonella

A common bark dwelling Euryopis/Emertonella body length to about 6mm females, 5mm males, recognisable by the silver and copper design in a V shape on the rear edges of a triangular abdomen, otherwise black. They dwell under loose sheets of bark, especially grey gums, seeming to synchronise their breeding season with the eucalypts they live on. Their food is probably mostly ants and possibly other bark dwelling arthropods. Naming this and related species is tricky at the moment. It is one of a few Australian species currently informally placed in Euryopis yet probably congeneric with the North American Emertonella emertoni. Emertonella can be used for an undescribed species, because it is not being used as an incorrect name combination but it should be noted we don't officially have named Emertonella species in the Australia fauna so its use is informal only. Thanks to Helen Smith for her advice. ♀ 5mm ♂ 4mm
